Contraception
Bedsider
Bedsider.org is an online birth control support network operated by Power to Decide. Power to Decide works to ensure that every young person has the power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant—increasing their opportunity to pursue the future they want.
Emergency contraceptive works by preventing an egg from being released from the ovaries into the uterus (ovulation). If there is no egg for the sperm to fertilize, you won’t become pregnant. Most emergency contraceptive (EC) has to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. the sooner you take it, the more likely it is to work.
Some EC may be less effective for people who weigh 155 lbs and up, but there have not been many studies on it. There is a prescription EC called Ella that has a higher chance of working for people 155-195 lbs. The most effective option for all weights is the copper IUD. Copper IUDs can be used as EC within 5 days of unprotected sex and long-term BC. Having an IUD placed can be painful, if you are concerned about the pain you can request local anesthetic.
EC is very effective and safe to use with gender-affirming care. EC does not stay in your body for very long, so if you have unprotected sex again after taking EC, you may not be protected. That also means taking EC will not affect your ability to get pregnant in the future.
